Water leaking under the kitchen sink: first checks
Most sink leaks come from loose waste pipes, tap connectors, bottle traps or old sealant. You can reduce damage before a plumber arrives.
This guide is for first checks only. If there is shock, sparks, burning smell, active leakage near wiring, unstable structure or anything you are unsure about, stop and call a qualified professional.
A small leak under the sink can quietly damage cabinets and attract pests. The first job is to stop water spread and identify whether it is supply water or drain water.
What you can check safely
- Turn off the angle valve below the sink if water is actively dripping.
- Dry the area with a cloth and place a bucket under the leak.
- Run the tap briefly and see if the leak starts only when water drains.
- Check if the smell is from drain water.
- Take a clear photo of the pipe joint for quoting.
What not to do
- Do not keep tightening plastic nuts until they crack.
- Do not use cement or hard glue on a removable trap.
- Do not ignore swollen cabinet wood.
