Ceiling fan running slow even at full speed

A slow ceiling fan can be caused by a weak capacitor, old regulator, dust, low voltage or motor wear.

Safety note

This guide is for first checks only. If there is shock, sparks, burning smell, active leakage near wiring, unstable structure or anything you are unsure about, stop and call a qualified professional.

This problem is common in older homes and rental flats. Sometimes it is a small part. Sometimes the fan is telling you the wiring or regulator needs attention.

What you can check safely

  1. Check whether all fans are slow or only one fan is slow.
  2. Clean heavy dust from blades if you can do it safely from a stable ladder.
  3. Try the fan at different regulator levels.
  4. Listen for humming, grinding or heating from the motor.
  5. If only one fan is slow, avoid running it for long hours until checked.

What not to do

  • Do not oil sealed fan motors randomly.
  • Do not change capacitor values without knowing the fan rating.
  • Do not work on the fan wiring without switching off power.
