Burning smell from switchboard: what you should do first
A burnt smell from a switchboard is a warning sign. Turn off the circuit and get it inspected before using it again.
This guide is for first checks only. If there is shock, sparks, burning smell, active leakage near wiring, unstable structure or anything you are unsure about, stop and call a qualified professional.
Heat marks, crackling sounds or a plastic burning smell should never be treated as normal. It can come from loose terminals, overload, poor-quality fittings or ageing wiring.
What you can check safely
- Turn off the affected switch if it is safe to reach.
- Switch off the related MCB from the main board.
- Unplug appliances connected near that switchboard.
- Keep children away from the area.
- Take a photo from a safe distance and share it with a technician.
What not to do
- Do not spray water or perfume near the board.
- Do not keep using the socket because it still works.
- Do not replace only the faceplate without checking the wiring behind it.
