Power gone in one room but the rest of the house works
A single-room power cut often points to a tripped circuit, loose connection, damaged switchboard, faulty socket or wiring issue.
This guide is for first checks only. If there is shock, sparks, burning smell, active leakage near wiring, unstable structure or anything you are unsure about, stop and call a qualified professional.
In many Trivandrum homes, one room or one side of a flat may be on a separate circuit. That is useful for safety, but it also means a small fault can cut power only in that area.
What you can check safely
- Check if lights, fans and sockets are all off in that room or only one point is affected.
- Look at the main DB and see if any MCB is down.
- Unplug devices in the affected room before switching the MCB back on.
- If one socket smells burnt or has black marks, leave it unused.
- Keep the room dry if the issue started after rain or seepage.
What not to do
- Do not use an extension cord from another room for heavy appliances.
- Do not ignore flickering lights before the power loss.
- Do not open switch plates when the circuit is live.
