MCB switch not staying up? What to check safely in Trivandrum
If the MCB or fuse board switch keeps falling, do not force it. It usually means overload, leakage, a short circuit or a faulty appliance.
This guide is for first checks only. If there is shock, sparks, burning smell, active leakage near wiring, unstable structure or anything you are unsure about, stop and call a qualified professional.
This is one of the most common emergency electrical calls we hear in Trivandrum, especially during monsoon. The safe aim is not to push the switch harder. The aim is to remove possible load and identify if the fault is inside an appliance or wiring.
What you can check safely
- Switch off and unplug high-load appliances on that circuit, especially iron box, heater, mixer, washing machine or pump.
- Make sure your hands and the floor are dry before touching the switchboard area.
- Try lifting the MCB only once after removing the appliances.
- If it stays up, plug appliances back one by one to find the problem appliance.
- If it trips again with everything unplugged, stop. The circuit needs testing.
What not to do
- Do not tape the switch up or hold it by force.
- Do not open the distribution board unless you are licensed.
- Do not keep retrying if you smell burning or see sparks.
